Data Center Migration Services

Moving a data center is mostly planning. We audit what you run, map every dependency, pick the right method for each workload and schedule cut-overs around your business hours. Then we move servers, storage and applications to a new site, a colocation facility or the cloud, and stay on for support after go-live.

Overview

What is data center migration?

Data center migration is the process of moving servers, storage, applications and data from one environment to another. That could be a new building, a colocation facility, a public cloud such as Azure or AWS, or a mix of these.

A good migration keeps the business running while it happens. That takes a full inventory, a clear order of moves, tested backups and a rollback plan for every step. Our data center migration services cover all of this from first audit to post-move support.

Migration Types

Types of data center migration

Each workload gets the method that suits it. Most projects combine two or more of these.

Lift and shift (rehost)

Move servers and applications as they are to new hardware or a new site. Fastest route with the least change.

Data center to cloud

Move selected workloads to Azure, AWS or Google Cloud, keeping the rest on-premise in a hybrid setup.

Relocation and colocation moves

Physically move racks to a new building or a colocation facility, with packing, transport and re-racking.

Data center consolidation

Combine several server rooms or data centers into fewer, more efficient sites, often with server virtualisation.

Hardware refresh migration

Move workloads from old servers and storage to new platforms, such as HCI, during a planned upgrade.

Data and storage migration

Move data between storage systems with checks to confirm every file and database arrived intact.

Our Process

Our data center migration process

01

Assess

Inventory of servers, applications, data, licences and dependencies. We rate each workload for risk and business impact.

02

Plan

Migration strategy, move groups, cut-over windows, rollback steps and a communication plan.

03

Test

Pilot moves and backup restore tests before any production system is touched.

04

Move

Staged cut-overs, usually outside business hours, with our engineers on site and remote.

05

Validate

Application checks, performance tests and sign-off, followed by hypercare support.

Planning and Risk

Data center migration checklist and risks

Most migration problems come from things nobody listed. Our checklist and risk assessment close those gaps before moving day.

Migration checklist

Asset list, network and IP plan, licences, vendor contacts, backups, rollback steps, test cases and sign-off owners.

Common risks

Hidden dependencies, data loss, longer downtime than planned, licence issues and performance drops after the move.

How we reduce them

Dependency mapping, verified backups, pilot moves, change freezes and a tested rollback for every step.

FAQs

Data center migration FAQs

Data Center Migration FAQs

  • What is data center migration?

Data center migration is moving servers, storage, applications and data from one environment to another, such as a new site, a colocation facility or the cloud, while keeping the business running.

  • What are the main data center migration risks?

The main risks are hidden application dependencies, data loss or corruption, longer downtime than planned, licensing problems and slower performance after the move. Careful planning and testing reduce each of these.

  • How long does a data center migration take?

It depends on the number of systems and the method. A small server room can move in a weekend. A larger data center is usually moved in stages over several weeks after a planning phase.

  • What does a data center migration cost?

Cost depends on the number of servers and applications, the distance for physical moves, the target (new site, colocation or cloud) and how much downtime is acceptable. We share a fixed quote after the assessment.

  • Can you migrate without downtime?

Some workloads can move with near-zero downtime using replication. Others need a short planned outage. We tell you which is which during planning.

  • What is data center consolidation?

Consolidation means combining several server rooms or data centers into fewer sites, usually with virtualisation, to cut costs and simplify management. It is often done as part of a migration.
